CRCLM-1138

This time Thursday did not escape me!

So whats been going on this week....aside from my paper cut on my pinkey which stings into next week, not overly much.

I've just kinds been chilling working on my curriculum most of the week.  Here are some pictures of what I've been doing.

This isn't even half of what I still have to work on.  But this is really good progress.

In other news, I am in the middle of writing my next article for the paper.  I have information from Trapp River North Stars and Pine Road Pioneers to talk about what they like to do and what kind of activities are coming up for them.

Lets see....what else.  I've sent out a YAC survey in hopes to improve the experience for everyone.  We'll need all the help we can get if we're going to do everything on our ambitious calendar this year.  So hopefully those YAC kids step up to the plate and hit a homerun!

Wow....sports analogies now....

Well I've got lots to work on and I don't want to lose my momentum.

So...

Until then!

The Curriculum Strikes Back

OOPS!! Thursday slipped through my fingers faster than an egg yolk.

Ok, admittedly that was an odd simile, but it worked for my purposes.  Just a few minutes ago moments ago I was looking at my calendar and I realized that all of a sudden it was Friday and I hadn't written my post yet.  Well I guess it makes sense.  I ended up having to run a few errands yesterday.  You know the kind, where you have to drive someone to pick up their car from the auto shop, buttheyaren'topenyeteventhoughtheyaresupposedtoopenthirtyeightminutesagosoyouhavetodrivethembackafewhourslater. You know that kind. I am, however, glad I did it yesterday and not today.  The roads are pretty  bad today.  They are all covered in snow. So pretty.  For those of you who don't know me, I love snow. I would love to live in a place where it snowed all year round.  Summer is not my cup of tea, and tea is more enjoyable in the winter anyway.

I digress....

This past week has been pretty good and fairly productive.

On Saturday we had the Financial Wellness Conference.  I was glad to not be the sole person in charge.  In fact, all I was in charge of was two little sessions. And that I even had help with because I recruited a volunteer to help teach it.  Our session was called "Back to Basics: Saving Money the Old Fashioned Way." We covered all sorts of things.  Things such as: the million uses of baking soda, vinegar, how you can reuse the magnetic strip from cassette tapes (crochet them to make a bag), crocheting plastic bags to make a durable bag that is good for carrying wet things, good uses for the end bits of skeins of yarn, Christmas Ornaments, gifts, MASTER MIX, and much more.  With the kids we even did a hands on project.  We made keychain/zipper pulls from stuff we had left over in the 4-H supply closet, and we made felted pouches made from wool roving we had left over also from our supply closet.  The main thing we wanted to get across with our project was that there are many ways to make things, and making things sometimes saves you money.  The adult session was more of a discussion of different things you can do, we exchanged ideas between the attendees and the leaders. It was really great. I'm glad we had the opportunity to participate.  Hopefully 4-H will be able to partner with them next year!

Monday was pretty quiet in the office.  It was Martin Luther King Jr. Day.  I guess the state office chose that for their floating holiday this year, so all the state employees were out of the office.  The county was still open, so we had to be here.  It was me, and the two administrative assistants.  The rest of the week was alot like that since all the agents were at a conference until yesterday.  I took this opportunity to get some work on using the copier to scan pictures.

That has become one of my projects.  We are slowly working on cleaning out our storage cage and one of my contributions to that will be going through the old pictures from 4-H activities and turning them into digital files.  This way we can keep them and take up less space in storage.  If we ever need any of the pictures, we can go on the computer, send the file somewhere and pick up the print! So far I've scanned about 130 pictures.  We probably have over a thousand pictures to go through.  Its going to be a long arduous project. Oh well.  I volunteered for it. It was my idea.

As far as my other projects go... my curriculum....well I have a skeleton outline now. So now I just have to fill in the details, and divide it into the different grade levels. I'm excited for it!

I'm also I'm getting ready for my 4-H meeting next Saturday.  It will just be an informational meeting seeing if people would be interested in starting up a new club in the metro area.  If they do, we will meet later in February to do enrollment forms and what-not.  Especially since they have to be in by March 1st if they want to show in this years fair.  So hopefully I get some people for that.  If any of you are interested.....

I hope to see you there!

Until then!

A Clockwork Summit

Well this week has been a busy week for the most part.  Not so busy that I'm running around like a chicken with my head cut off, but busy enough that I'm not getting bored, which is always good.  As they say, idle hands are the devil's playground.

Lets see, I have to think about what has happened all this week.  I guess we can start on Saturday.

Saturday was our big Engaging and Sustaining Youth Leadership in Marathon County Summit.  As far as I'm concerned it was a fantastic success.  I wish I had pictures of this to show you, but they haven't been posted anywhere yet, and I personally didn't take any.  I'll give you a brief overview of how the day went.

I got there early because I had to set up a booth about 4-H.  There were a bunch of local organizations there with booths and leadership/engagement opportunities.  We were there chatting with the participants for about twenty minutes.  It was a good networking tool.  After that, as a group, we had introductions and hear our keynote speaker.  For this we were fortunate enough to have Congressman Sean Duffy as our speaker.  I use the term fortunately not in a political sense, but in the sense of "we were fortunate to get a member of the United States Congress to talk to us."  My own political views are not of any importance in this blog.  As far as his speech went it was really great.  The topic, community engagement, was something that he was passionate about.  He didn't turn it into a debate about dems and reps, he kept it neutral, and even mentioned his experience on the Real World....I may have to YouTube that. After he spoke we had a panel of four local leaders in our community, the county board chair, a big wig at the local technical college, an owner of one of the bars in town, and a big wig in the United Way.  They just discussed what engaged meant and what are some ways that the community is engaged and what are some ways we could be more engaged, that sort of thing.  It was really good and informative.

After that we broke out into song....no wait...break out sessions! That was it! These sessions were divided into three different categories.  They were business, government, and non-profit.  I sat in on the non-profit conversation.  In this one we talked mostly about boards and whether or not young people sit on the boards of organizations.  I think the 4-H Leader's Federation is one of the better ones about that because almost half of the Federation is youth.  There are four youth and four adults from each district, then there is also the officers who are all adults, but everyone gets a fair say and a fair vote, so its pretty well distributed.

From this point we had lunch, then we had a presentation about all the data we collected from the focus groups.  The results were pretty much that people wanted to be personally invited to events or board meetings and that there needed to be a single place where all the events were advertised.  The last thing on our agenda was the World Cafe.  This was a round table discussion.  For every question you sit at a different table with different people.  For this I was a table host, this meant that I stayed at the table I was at and I made sure the conversation kept going.  I enjoyed it and we got  a goodly amount of conversation from it.  After this I actually left because I wasn't feeling well.  Overall, it seemed to be a very good summit that had good information presented and taken in. Go us!

This week I have been getting ready for the Financial Wellness Conference.  Although I am not actually teaching my session, I am getting all the handouts ready for the person who is.  Our session is called "Back to Basics: Saving Money the Old Fashioned Way."  My presenter is going to bring examples of different ways to reuse and recycle or upcycle things people have around the house.  She will also talk about ways to save money in the kitchen, specifically using a MASTER MIX.  This is just a basic mix that you add wet ingredients too.  Not only does this save money, but it saves time as well.  It is quite handy and sounds easy. We are also discussing the thousands of uses for baking soda and vinegar.  Ok, maybe not thousands, but at least hundreds.

Other than this, the next thing I have coming up is kind of a side project that I'm doing on my own, not as part of my VISTA term.  I am trying to put together an urban 4-H club...well as urban as it gets here.  I have my informational meeting scheduled for Feb. 2nd.  Hopefully there is interest and hopefully it all works out! So I have to plan for that.  I've been thinking about it, and I kind of wish I could divide myself into two and one half will take the youth and one half would take the adults....apart from that, I don't really know who to ask to help me.  Maybe I could convince my dad to entertain the kids...

Until then!

Craft Runner

WELL, this post should be jam packed full of good things.  I've had a very busy week, and it has been amazing!

I suppose I'll start with Hands-On Day and post some pictures from it. It was a success.  Not everyone who signed up showed up, but that is ok.  That will happen with any event you have. I don't think I really need to much about it into words.  I'll let the pictures do the talking. (33 pictures equals 33,000 words, right?)

So much fun.

As much as I enjoyed it, I'm glad that is one thing I can mark off my to do list and focus on the next thing.

And the next things is the Leadership Summit! That is this coming Saturday, and preparations are in full swing.  Mostly all I have to do to get ready for it is put together the display for my table before the event begins. So I have my Marathon County 4-H tri-fold display that I made this summer all ready, and I made a small display about being a leader in 4-H.  I even went so far as to make a brochure about being a leader in 4-H.  Most of the brochures we have here are all about joining as a member, none as a leader.  So I put one together.  The reason I need information about being a leader is because this summit is for high school kids and adults.  Recruiting members is fine, but the high school youth would only be able to be in 4-H for a few years.  You can, however, be a leader at any adult age.  4-H is always looking for more leaders.  Leaders and volunteers are the backbone of the organization. I'm looking forward to it.  I just hope I can wake up in time.  I need to be there by 7:30 at the latest. (I'm so not a morning person.  My boyfriend says that will change...Any way to speed that change up?)

Well I'm about a month away from being half-way through my VISTA position, therefore, I need to come up with what will be my, for the sake of argument lets call it a capstone.  The sustainable programming I will leave behind.  I think I have figured out what that will be. I will write a set of curriculum guides for a 4-H based community service program for grades 4-8.  This will consist of three sets of curriculum and one leaders guide for each.  I will run a test pilot of this program with the Afterschool program in the school district I work in.  Here's hoping it works!

Next week I will be getting ready for the Financial Wellness Conference.  Luckily I won't have to do too much for it.

Until then!
